10 TIMELESS GROOMING TECHNIQUES FOR MEN

Being well-groomed will not only enhance your appearance, but more importantly it can also help you feel more confident and better about yourself. And living with low self-esteem and confidence can impact your mental health and lead to problems such as depression and anxiety. So here are some of our favourite male grooming techniques that will help boost your confidence.

Trim those Nose hairs

Whilst we all know that bad breath is the ultimate turn off, it turns our that 46% of women surveyed by Women’s Health Magazine would rather talk to a guy whose mouth smells like a sewer than a guy with a few stray nose hairs sticking out! Whilst nose hair is an important part of your body's defence system and helps keep dust, allergens, and other small particles from entering your lungs we don’t recommend just letting nature take its course. The best approach is to use a nose hair trimmer rather than plucking or waxing as it’s possible to get an infection of the follicle or ingrown hairs. Consider a trimmer that can also be used to tidy stray ear hairs.

Trim the Eyebrows

It's not till our late twenties or thirties that the hair on our eyebrows starts to grow in a way that it needs maintenance. In fact, not grooming your eyebrows can lead to a unibrow and wild looking hairs that distract others when they speak to you up close. Ask yourself, Are your eyebrows symmetrical? Neat? Cleanly divided, with an open space above the bridge of the nose? If not, you will benefit from at least some eyebrow grooming. We're not talking major changes, here. The goal is to neaten the shape, not to transform it.

Maintain your Beard

If you’re going to grow a beard or already have a beard, then you need to maintain it. A trip to the barber is your best bet but for a DIY job follow the tips here.

Get your Hair cut regularly

Seek out a good barber and decide on a hairstyle that you love and that suits you. Then make regular appointments to maintain your hair. This will ensure that your hair doesn’t end up growing out too much and become overly messy. Getting a haircut regularly will also keep your hair in top condition and help avoid split ends.  And, did you know that shampooing your hair every day can do more harm than good? Over-washing can cause the hair to dry out, leaving it straw-like and brittle. But we get it, if you’re tearing up the track or HIITing it hard every day, you’re going to have to clean your hair. Oh, and by the way, if you’re at all concerned about losing your hair, then check out our tips here to help prevent hair loss.

Have a Skincare Routine

Research shows that skin concerns or disorders can affect self-image and mental health.  So, if you’ve been skipping out on skin care, it’s time to take action. You need to care for your facial skin for the same reasons you need to care for your hair, your teeth, your body, and your mind - because lack of care accelerates the effects of ageing. And just a few simple changes to your routine can have long-lasting results.

Keep your Nails short and clean

No explanation required as to why dirty, long fingernails are a no go. If your budget or schedule permits, try a monthly manicure/pedicure.

Take care of your Smile

The appearance of your teeth, and general oral health, can have a massive impact on your confidence. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again; bad breath is the ultimate turn off – as is talking to someone who has built up plaque or food stuck between their teeth. So, first and foremost practice good oral health.  This should include brushing and flossing your teeth daily. We recommend investing in a good quality electric toothbrush. And, don’t forget to visit a reputable dentist for regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. Wear Sunscreen year-round

Sun damage can have a serious impact on our skin. While you may not notice it in your 20s, the damage done will start to appear in premature fine lines and wrinkles as you get older. Sun damage can also lead to age spots and even skin cancer. So, it comes as no surprise that using sunscreen daily is one of the most inexpensive ways to keep your skin looking its best for the longest period of time possible. Your skin is exposed to the sun every time you go outdoors and these momentary daily exposures to the sun can start to take their toll in the long term. For best protection, use an oil-free, water-resistant moisturiser with an SPF of 30 or higher all year round. Remember, sun damage is cumulative, which means the sooner you work to prevent it by applying a broad spectrum sunscreen daily, the better off you'll be.

Choose a Signature Scent

A good cologne (or aftershave) will help you stay smelling fresh all day long. Plus a signature scent can help you feel more confident and give off a great first impression to those around you. Just remember not to bathe in it, because “a little goes a long way”, in fact the National Institutes of Health estimate humans can detect over a trillion odours — and if your cologne smells too strong, it can literally choke people, causing asthma attacks, setting off allergic reactions and more. Wow.

Wear Clothes that are Tailored to fit your Body
